Introduction to PHOTOGRAPHY...
By Michael Marques
Photography is a form of artistic expression. I took up photography as a hobby. As with many hobbies, some can be more expensive than others. There are many types of styles and equipment to chose from. If you are new to this, it can be somewhat overwhelming to get started. This post is intended to provide a simple way to look at photography - more technical details will be provided in future posts. So let’s review some of the basics to getting started in photography... First you may want to consider your passions for photography. What are your goals? --- Do you want to create long lasting memories of family & friends? Are your more into Architecture? Would you like taking shots of animals or nature? Is setting up modeling sessions or formal weddings something you’re interested in? There are many more options, but first you should identify what drives you and what will keep you interested in maintaining this hobby. So now, you’ve identified what pleases you most (it could be some of the examples provided, or all of them - all up to you)! You will now need to determine what type of equipment you will need to get started. Photography is very personal, and equipment is the same. With the intent of keeping things simple for a beginner, we can review some camera bodies and other equipment needed to get you started. In the digital age we live in, we will stick to recommending digital cameras as opposed to film cameras. There is nothing wrong with film cameras and dark rooms, etc.. There is a special art to that form of photography as well. I just find digital photography much more flexible and easier to translate into everyday life. Here is some equipment you’ll need to get started: * First off, a camera body. Depending on what you decide to do with your photography, this can range from your standard (compact) digital cameras; to a high-end digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera. Compact digital camera are all-in-on alternatives to high-end cameras. Lenses are built-in and can limit some artistic output of the individual photographer, however, some compacts actually take very good pictures. They range from $50.00-$600.00 on average. * Digital SLR’s are purchased by camera body. The lenses are then bought separately for the individual camera body. Canon and Nikon are the most popular camera bodies. I recommend Canon. Once you decide what camera body you like (whether for novice, semi-pro or pro), you can build your lenses around that. You can consider the mega-pixels if you plan on printing large-scale formats of the photos you take. The higher the megabyte count per pixel, the better the quality of the print. Otherwise, nowadays, the quality of photo pixels are all good (for average photography endeavors). You don’t need to get the best of cameras or lenses to take great pictures. Average costs for SLR’s are $600-$3,000. * So for lenses, you will have all types of sizes and formats to chose from. Some are low light lenses, some are zoom lenses, some are fixed lenses, autofocus, etc.. The key with these is to ensure you purchases lenses that are ultimately compatible with upgraded camera bodies. You can check with the retailer on these. The best lenses are made of glass (L-Class) lenses and are the types of lenses which can be carried over to other camera bodies when/if you chose to upgrade your camera body down the road. Average cost of lenses range from $75.00-$2,000. * I will also recommend/list photo-editing software as part of this equipment. In the past, there were darkrooms to process film. A good software program will do wonders for your shots, and you can become even more creative with such software after pictures are taken. I recommend photoshop, but there are many more to chose from!!! Average cost of photo-editing software rages from $35.00-$1,000. These are basic summaries of what you need to get started.... Learning the basics of photography and having a good (artistic) eye will be the gage to your content and success. The key is to learn and have fun while practicing in different environments. You want to start of slow; do some research through books, websites, networking and practice, practice, practice.... My best friend is a Professional Photographer and has taught me a lot to get started. He started out like everyone else, and I invite you to take a look at his website link (here and below) to see what you can do. He does photography locally in the Phoenix metro area and comes highly recommended!!!
