Coenzyme Q10 for LIFE
By Michael Marques
Over the years, many of us have turned to miracle drugs or supplements - all of which claim to cure or treat a variety of serious diseases. With each new pill, comes new hope. CoQ10 (also known as Ubiquinone or Coenzyme Q10)is no different. It has been studied by many groups; to include for example, the world-famous Mayo Clinic. As with many traditional medicine facilities and groups, supplements are almost always defined as requiring more research. However, in traditional Chinese medicine, Japan, Europe and independant US trials, the studies conducted on the benefits of CoQ10 therapy are somewhat more optimistic and defined. Physicians in many other countries even prescribe CoQ10 as medication to their patients. As the flood of new supplements and drugs drown our senses, let us not forgot how important CoQ10 really is. This substance is the building block of energy within our cells. It is needed for cells to breathe and produce energy. The mitochondria cannot produce energy without proper CoQ10 levels. Many compare it to the spark that an engine needs to start a car. Without CoQ10, the cell cannot produce energy. Do our bodies readily synthesize CoQ10? Yes! So why should we add supplementation to that? Well, as we age and/or become more prone to disease, pollution, certain prescription drugs and nutritionally-dense foods; there is a deficiency in CoQ10 availability and production within the body. Adding CoQ10 will help ensure protection and energy production at a cellular level. The highest concentration of CoQ10 is in the heart muscle. Some studies have found great benefits with added CoQ10 supplementation for those suffering from heart ailments. In fact, those who were administered high doses of CoQ10 right after a heart attack (congestive heart failure) had a higher survival and recovery rate than those that didn’t. Many holistic medicine practitioners have recommended that adding CoQ10 to your regimen will enhance the strength and vitality of your heart and improve oxygen delivery to the heart’s muscle/cells. Studies in Europe have concluded that CoQ10 is effective in various cancer treatments. Since cancer is cell related, CoQ10 acts as an antioxidant and may protect cells. CoQ10 also has an immune-boosting effect and protects the body during Chemotherapy treatments, e.g. reducing nausea, reducing risk of radiation therapy and improving recovery time. Japanese studies show that CoQ10 is an effective therapy in treating periodontal disease. If you experience problems with your gums, it would be beneficial to use this supplement. Those with deficient levels of CoQ10 show greater risk of periodontal disease. Other studies find positive results when taking CoQ10 to help with the slowing of Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, migraine headaches, obesity, angina and high blood pressure, etc.. Depending on health status, any range from 30mgs-300mgs per day is adequate. In theory, this substance can even improve overall lifespan. Based on the sheer time spent studying its benefits, CoQ10 may prove to be something to consider as a form of treatment and preventative health agent.
